When the tert butanol process encounters bottlenecks, replacing tert butanol with isobutene is a feasible breakthrough direction. Patent [10] discloses a method for preparing 2-tert butylhydroquinone and co producing BHA using isobutene as an alkylation reagent, which has good selectivity and high raw material utilization rate.
The tert butanol method is widely used and can be catalyzed by strong acids such as concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated phosphoric acid. Both domestic and foreign patent literature have reported this process, such as using toluene or xylene as solvents, the selectivity and yield of this reaction are relatively ideal. In addition, strong acidic ion exchange resins such as D001 and Amberlyst 35, solid acids [5], zeolites [6], and ionic liquids [7] can also be used as catalysts for this reaction, but their catalytic activity is not ideal.
Using isobutylene as an alkylation reagent requires a reaction under closed conditions, which can also be catalyzed by strong acids. In a mixed solvent of xylene and ketone, 85% phosphoric acid is used as a catalyst [8], and isobutylene is added to synthesize tert butylhydroquinone. The selectivity of the single tert butylation reaction can reach over 90%. Cationic resin [9] can also serve as a catalyst for this reaction, but the effect is not very ideal. Isobutene has higher activity than tert butanol, and its application and promotion prospects are very optimistic.

As a food additive, o-tert-butylhydroquinone has been used in the United States and other more than 20 countries, China was approved in 1992 for use in oil and grease-containing foods, thousands of fish products, biscuits, quick-cooking noodles, canned foods containing fat, cured meat products and so on. In the United States and China, the maximum permitted dosage of TBHQ in food is 200 ppm.
The commonly used methods for o-tert-butylhydroquinone include direct method, seed method, pumping method, spray impregnation method, mixing method, etc. Today, we focus on the seed method:
"First dissolve TBHQ in a small amount of oil (or 95% alcohol solution), formulated as 5% ~ 10% of TBHQ oil (or alcohol solution), then directly or by the dosage added to the fat or oil to go and then stir, so that TBHQ uniform distribution."
